Judging from her treatment of trolls she seems to be an exemplary human, and while she has so far been unable to reform hardened I love Mary Beard. I really enjoyed Mary's style of writing, in particular her ability to communicate her enthusiasm for this period of history without overreaching and becoming either sensationalist or reductionist. She most definitely did. However I picked the book back up and made another attempt at it, and got much more out of it. Beard tells this story precisely and clearly, with passion and without technical jargon… The author has done a spectacular job in making what I thought would be an interesting journey into a fascinating period of history a hard slog. I started it over again after reading the first 100 pages, and this helped me some. For example, she takes the so-called 'Catiline conspiracy' at the start and looks at how it becomes a site of contestation between conservatives and radicals not just in 63 BCE but also for later ages right up to our own (e.g. She chose to end her treatise during reign of Caracalla, but this is somewhat arbitrary as any details of his tyranny are given only in passing. Although I find that history interesting too, the early history of how Rome came about is terribly important because it helps you put it into perspective. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to readers interested in the history of Rome before the 3rd Century CE, and especially to budding young historians who want to learn how to evaluate evidence.
