Stolen emeralds, an endangered prince, a fog-bound steamship, a plane crash, a revolver hidden in a purse. Holmes reveals that the prince was a decoy; he was posing as a prince who was posing as Watson's nephew. Both are looking to get away to Scotland for a little rest and relaxation, but they get a curious call for help from the Prime Minister of some Balkan country where the king has died. The men who are out to squelch his efforts are really interesting: a mute thug who uses sign language, a wiry Peter Lorre type with a foreign accent, and a sort of Sydney Greenstreet wannabe.

Still, it's Rathbone and Bruce doing their thing and that's highly enjoyable to watch even in a lesser Holmes film. Was this review helpful? Was this review helpful? Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are called upon to help an heir to a European throne. Directed by Roy William Neill.

Prince Nikolas is now to pose as Watson's nephew while on board, the new plan is to sail to Algiers and hand the prince over to other trustworthy agents to complete his journey to Rovenia. Without giving anything away, Holmes keeps his cards close to his vest until the denouement.

The first film in the series made after the end of World War 2, Pursuit To Algiers is less of a mystery and more of a spy film, and in fact not even one that makes much sense for the period in which it was written. Our hero has See also. Not by accident as reported, but was assassinated.

Watson has cause to believe he has been killed; but he eventually does meet his partner aboard the ship they had planned to sail on, after several neat plot twists and a display of unusual intelligence by Holmes; and from then on, the two are kept exceptionally busy trying to assess who the potential murderers are (who will be their deadly opponents). It is not awful, none of the films in the series are really, but it felt rather underwhelming, especially when Hound of the Baskervilles, Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Scarlet Claw, The Spider Woman and Pearl of Death were as good as they were.

The Sherlock Holmes Series is actually fun for the fans of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, but the individual films are a mixed bag as mysteries themselves. The best mysteries are THE SCARLET CLAW, THE HOUSE OF FEAR, THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES, SHERLOCK HOLMES FACES DEATH. The film does have a nice atmosphere and doesn't look too bad, but there is a sense that the production was hurried. Outlaw King, stylized as Outlaw/King, is a 2018 historical action drama film about Robert the Bruce, the 14th-century Scottish King who launched a guerilla war against the larger English army. While this is contrived and silly at times, the best part of it, for me, was the fact that everyone knows what Holmes is up to and he still manages to come out on top. Please make sure and get the UCLA restored version of this classic on DVD. Bernard Brown, for once, keeps a British film's voices and sounds perfectly intelligible.
