While the first ones climactic shootout seemed to come out of nowhere without much buildup…Didn't realize this was a sequel to the director's earlier Australian-Aboriginal Cop Western MYSTERY ROAD until I started it, although I maybe should have made the connection, considering it starred the same actor and fell into the same genre--part sequel, part commentary on the events of that earlier film, you don't need to have seen MYSTERY ROAD to enjoy this (although it does help) and while it does deal matter-of-factly with many of the same issues (colonialism, day-to-day corruption in Australia, the sex trade and exploitation of women, men shooting other men with sniper rifles) and features striking cinematography in a small rural Northern Australian location that is evocative of the earlier film as well, it does a couple of…I shudder wondering how much of this stuff is really fiction. 'Goldstone' is the sequel to 'Mystery Road', a decent Australian outback murder-mystery, but I actually liked 'Goldstone' better, as it has more unknowns and undercurrents than it's predecessor. It's a haunting prefiguration of the three cultural forces at play as Goldstone settles into its contemporary setting.…Other than Maureen and the old guy with 2 minutes of screen time who drops 4 f-bombs a sentence, these characters are extremely dull, which made me quickly lose interest in this movieNot bad, but no where near the level of Mystery Road. I mean, I was planing to watch MYSTERY ROAD, eventually. Indigenous Detective Jay Swan arrives in the frontier town of Goldstone on a missing persons inquiry. This one also had less of a western feel to it which I loved in Mystery Road.

It has proved to be tremendously rewatchable. Now, suddenly, I love them. But there are parallels between the two films that go beyond extending Sen’s original narrative and step into the realm of re-interpretation.
