And so we’re really feeling it.We’re in this imposed motivational outlook because we can’t do certain things. Well, I think what is really basic is that people are not lazy, all right? And so, she said getting in touch with that connection was really important to her.And then Calla realized that the company had gone through a new system and she didn’t have the competence she needed. That’d be so great.”So, I’m holding this baby, Pete, and I’m realizing, “Wow, I’m really having a wonderful moment here because I love babies. You don’t even say, “I can’t do this,” or, “I must do that.” It’s like, “Well, hey, because of this, I’m choosing this.” And so, it keeps that choice factor alive and functioning for your motivation in that domain. And he mentions how bad motivation actually spoils. And that’s what it takes to eventually achieve great things. But what’s most surprising is, I think, that we’ve just had this totally wrong impression of what motivation is, and it’s hard to change our perspective because a lot of our notions about motivation that were developed during the B. F. Skinner days, where we did all the research on animals and operant conditioning, you know, carrots and sticks, it’s so prevalent in our society. Now we finally understand the magic—and the science—behind how they’ve done it. And the byproduct would be results of byproduct would be what they were looking for. We had no idea how hard it would be. And I said, “Wow, okay, I value learning. Well, yeah, think about this. Um, initially a lot of the neuroscience, uh, was misinterpreting the, the work because what they found was that, um, like if people get rewards, like external rewards, if they win a prize, that it would light up the pleasure part of the brain. I love their book. All of them answer that question. Doctors explained that if Terry lived, she would never have the mental mid. I don’t remember. I’m pretty well geared-up to do it.” But what was missing from me, really missing from me in that moment was connection. So that is what I’m trying to teach people. Susan, follower, are you ready to hold down?
And so, um, mindfulness is the greatest tool for self regulation. And the reason I’m motivated by money is because it’s going to buy me more power and status. I think so. Past the religion, you can find links to that and other resources on Susan’s show notes page, which you will find@fastleader.net slash Susan Fowler too. My desk needs to be tidied.” So they’re kind of procrastinating or putting it off. What is he meaning?Yeah. It could be from any genre. It’s that you have a number of frequency of motivationally, um, optimal experiences on a daily basis. So that’s part of my personality types. Relying on sheer determination eventually becomes exhausting–it’s not sustainable. It’s like, just, just wake me up when it’s over. Susan Fowler: Optimal motivation is the type of motivation required for changing behavior and sustaining the positive energy required to achieve goals.
And one of the reasons that I’m so, I guess, enamored with or have such a strong belief in the research basis for what I write about is that thousands of researchers have been doing very structured and progressive research for over 60 years, and it hasn’t been one big research study that proves it. And this is why the academic community is moving away from the simplistic concept of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation because it’s misleading to people that if you think that the only, there’s only good and bad motivation and the good motivation is intrinsic. It’s almost impossible to be mindful and not experience optimal motivation. So, they’re all totally interrelated.Okay, that’s great. Or just plain wrong. The rah-rah leaders to mention are often more interested in results than in people, more interested in their own self-serving values than other-focused values. But there’s a qualitative difference in the energy.
It’s, it’s, that’s what’s happens to a lot of people when we’re going through change initiatives in our organizations. And that still is very, very prevalent in my life because if I can’t be an authentic representation of what I’m hoping others will learn from the science of motivation, um, you know, then why am I in this business?
They had forgotten their joy of learning. But then imagine if you’re a leader, a manager, and at the end of every day, instead of saying, okay, what did you do today?
What other hazards, Steve?Well, I actually called them fatal distractions and fatal distractions are like the bright shiny objects that erode those three truths that eliminate our sense of choice, um, undermine our sense of connection and actually forge our competence. Um, I know that parents values are really, really important because as you said, we might come back to them, but the greatest, um, influencers of our values are the kids we hang out with.
Dr Edward D C really a pioneer in it.
Susan Pollard was born and raised in Eden, Enid, Oklahoma, and raised in Denver, Colorado. Uh, I was, I did a presentation, I had an event at the university of San Diego this week and I was doing a book signing and afterwards, um, and it was running a little bit later than everybody thought cause everyone stayed around. Whereas I think there’s a real distinction between happiness and joy. But anyway, it was, it was, um, a self-defining activity. So I, I being more collaborative, more open to saying yes to other people’s ideas.Susan, I had fun with you today. And a leader can always ask at the end of every day, “What did you learn? I don’t have to do this as a job.
