Sometimes I play video games because I want to zone out and not have to think about anything in particular.
They’ve not exactly enjoyed a faultless record since taking over from Bungie, with Halo 4 and 5 not being particularly loved and Halo: The Master Chief Collection being an absolute technical disaster for years. Typically it also takes a lot to get these players hyped up. Even less investment.Permadeath games are often seen as a hardcore mechanic suited for hardcore players who can shrug off any loss of progress. Also, most of my online gaming with my mates is done through the Xbox so unless they go PlayStation, which I know they won’t, then neither will I. To be eligible for the list, the game must be confirmed for 2020, or there should be good reason to expect its release in that year. Something unmemorable.My remark about the emotions of triumph and defeat being two sides of the same coin may make it sound like I am endorsing feelings of a defeat as a way of making the feeling of triumph more meaningful, but that is not how I see it, or at least, I would just as readily endorse the feeling of hard-earned triumph as a way of making subsequent feelings of defeat all the more agonising.So I guess what I am saying is: There is no shame at all in feeling defeated when playing a punishing game or in letting it really get to you. If there's one thing in particular I want to relay, it is that getting invested in a video game is no more or less silly than getting invested in a sports match or a dramatic play – and anyway silliness is vastly underrated in a culture that always encourages you to be a Serious PersonThere is nothing wrong with being triumphant or heartbroken over a video game. However, I feel that these games have sort of ruined my expectations for exploration and player reward in gaming.

The games in either category can operate in a turn-based or real-time fashion. The feeling of triumph and the feeling of defeat are two sides of the same coin because they both depend chiefly on my level of emotional investment.Certainly I could detach and tell myself "it's just a game" and be in a mentality where I can shrug off losing my best character in Realm of the Mad God or falling all the way down to the bottom in Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy.
Game Pass is another incentive but to be fair I find myself going ‘game blind’ when looking at the selection and spend more time procrastinating than playing.This console launch cycle though is leaving me wearier than others I can remember. For those times, I want a grindy game with steady, predictable progress.

The Grounded Difficulty and the Permadeath Mode trophy have appeared in The Last of Us Part II – both will be a must-have for masochists!

I think they’re all relaxing in the sun with an ice cold drink, laughing at another mess up by their rivals.Discussed this with not-so-mini-WoD and he’s thinking the exact same, there’s nothing out there at the minute to drive us to getting new consoles.For once I’m more than happy to wait and see how the new Halo turns out and look at the Xbox then, when Microsoft, most likely, do a relaunch to coincide with the release of the game. I mean Sony would have a good six months head start and we all know what happened to Sony in the PlayStation 3 days when they did a staged launch, Xbox 360 smashed them.
