This was back before they mandated 6 months of it be strictly ortho, which is awesome for the new residents. Every specialty has those "great saves," but you have to figure out if those are frequent enough to justify all the misery and heartache in between. The good is that you'll have a slightly better lifestyle. Just pick up a few issues from the library and look for the names that show up twice a year + call them up and see if you can get in. If you want to lift that badly, you will use those remaining hours to do so. This is completely sub-specialty dependent. If you're taking care of lacs in the ED, be willing/able to sew it up.Not OP but Handbook of fractures, Netter's orthopedic anatomy are good places to startNew comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be castPress J to jump to the feed. Once you know something well enough that people are willing to pay you for your knowledge, it has already become routine and much of the excitement will be gone. We'll save it in our wiki for future reference!Back when i used to be a mp3 bot for AOL giving away music. Personality of Ortho is diff than neurosurg. I’m in a group of 20 other orthopods. The other model of employment is hospital employed position. great points about neurosurg/ct surgery about but was wondering what your thoughts are on urology and ENT?? To get the volume you need to survive, chances are you’re living in a city. Try to get in with someone who publishes a lot to get your name on a paper in JBJS. Doesn't hurt to stay fit. Don’t be weird at interviewHow competitive are residency spots? This was at the tail end of the toxicity, so the groups ahead of us were sometimes bitter while we were right as rain.
So, if they choose spine surgery, it should be because they truly love it and will have passion and absolute enthusiasm about it … handbook of fractures is good, but I think orthobullets is better these days. There is no way anyone is going to let them fix femurs and tibias so they don’t threaten my job security.
3-7% in practice and I believe 10-15% of residents are now female. hey, thanks for the reply. If you don't know something, ask. I think if you LOVE the nervous system and being a hero, saving lives, then neurosurg is for you. The "whoa cool" factor will wear off fast, trust me.
If that’s an easy task? This is what I do. based on that, I feel that ent or uro will allow me to focus on surgeries earlier in my career and then as I become older, I can possibly slowly stop doing as many surgeries and focus on an office based practice and treat things medically and do small office procedures. Also, we have had many residents not AOA or had a Step 1 score below 230. Because of that, we've created our own shortage. I'm an avid bodybuilder as well, and love to lift in my free time when I'm not studying.
"PS. Is it more like, “oh that’s cute”, or is there any sort of respect at all?I would hope that we think you guys are just part of the team. But since i saw a derm post, we should be goodBackground: I'm a board certified orthopaedic surgeon. esp.
Now i'm in a larger city doing trauma related hospitalist/surgicalist gig.
Retina surgeons and Occuloplastics surgeons are pretty busy but still have decent lifestyles. He has been practicing for almost two years. The fields are completely different.
A trauma guy isn't going to have the lifestyle freedom that a hand guy is going to have, though there is a shift these days in trauma guys working 9-5 hours. This year I did ~500 operationsYou hit the nail on the head.
Brain/cancer mostly, and they get a CUT in pay. This is where reputations are made so first impressions were important. of fractures. Scopes? What about singing them 14 hours a day? This is becoming more popular because it’s more secure. Is it possible to be an ortho surgeon with D.O.
So I would say that from a supply demand standpoint, due to the immense supply of MSK complaints, ortho is even more in shortage than most of the fields out there. If you work in private practice, everything is incentivizing you to work because you're paying for overhead (staff, office, etc).
They are the ones who allows us to move, work and be active. The amount of subject material in this field is enormous, it ranges from hands, spines, sports, pediatric, tumor to feet/ankles and deformity to trauma.
I’m on call and bored. So there's never an end to the fun.Housekeeping: Due to the way residency is structured, residents now are getting less hands on experience than ever. Thanks a lot DHT. i would like to also have time to possibly work out and spend time on leisure activities as well, but am a committed guy. Hardly anyone turns away free eager laborFinal tip and most important.
Otherwise ... again for me it’s a no brainer. The minute i saw that shiny mallet, it was love at first sight. Also lifestyle angle, not sure I’ve met many lifestyle oriented neurosurgeons.I think you should consider what you'll be doing besides spine in either. Don't go MIA. I'm deciding between ophtho ortho (plusminus ENT). I don’t understand why people take their babies there in the weird videos I see on YouTubeI game a bit but that hobby is practically dead since I have a 1 year old now. Maybe a couple of hours of work a month. Trauma surgery is intense. Also, once you know the science cold, it gets stale. It’s hard for you to admit that you can’t handle everything by yourself. As always, how much money you want to make depends on how you want to work.
Just had an Ortho Attending the other day who had a retinal detachment and now repaired.
esp. great points about neurosurg/ct surgery about but was wondering what your thoughts are on urology and ENT?? A trauma guy isn't going to have the lifestyle freedom that a hand guy is going to have, though there is a shift these days in trauma guys working 9-5 hours. Nerves/CNS?
Meticulous. compared to ortho.
By the time you finish training, everyone will be in group or hospital-based practices. But in smaller towns, this will become an issue. Orthopedic surgeon lifestyle is not easy. You do the best you can so you can sleep at night with a good conscience.Work life balance is important.
