In 1789, the remains of Prince Sado, who was sentenced to death by his own father King Jeongjo, were moved to this location. To explain its history, I kind of have to go back and explain why it even exists.Okay, so once upon a time in the mid-1700s, there lived in a prince who suffered from severe mental illness. The ticket cost 1,500 South Korean Won (ignore the 9,000 figure on the above ticket by the way), which is about 2 US Dollars actually so by no means cheap. Seoul has an immense rail and metro system which is very easy to follow for a foreign tourist.
Most people that visit Seoul don’t even bother heading out of Seoul to see it. The summer months can be unbearably hot and winter months can be unbearably cold. It started with severe anxiety dealing with his father, and it worsened into him being physically violent as an adult. In 1997 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The oldest of these children was Jeongjo.Everything pretty much came to a head in 1762 when he threatened and tried to kill a court official’s son. It can be easily accessed via a short bus trip from Suwon station too. His father ordered him to climb into a small, wooden chest in the middle of July. It’s actually hard to miss. The city is located 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of Seoul and has a population of over one million. There are four main gates on the walk round the walls and the entire place is littered with well built and maintained brick buildings, all serving a purpose of their own and adding to the glamour of what has to be classed as an unknown and undermined travel gem. Get out of the bus at Paldalman (it’s at a roundabout with a monument in the middle of it – 10 minutes into the journey). It’s pretty cool because you can see the walls of the fortress and see just how If you follow the river to the first bridge (it’s set a floor below the road), turn right to go towards If you’re like us, we were pretty beat after all of this! I had read somewhere that parking costs 2,000 KRW (about 2 USD) but we weren’t charged anything to park here.

The only walled city I have been to was in Croatia, and this looks different yet equally as beautiful!What a beautiful place! Just walk up the steps and join the walls at any point and walk around, I mean the locals often just pass through the walls on their way through the city.I paid 1,500 South Korean Won for my ticket, but if you want to cheat you COULD do it for free.That said, I did the full circle walk all the way round the walls as that’s what I wanted and I decided to buy a ticket, as it helps preserve the Fortress and I don’t mind paying for things on my travels.

If you continue walking along the wall past the Pavilion, it will lead you to the Dongjangdae Command Post, the Dongbukgongsimdon Observation Tower, and the Changnyongmun Gate.Every Tuesday through Sunday, at 11AM, there is a martial arts performance at Sinpungnu (the main gate). We pretty much stopped by the first restaurant that advertised it. Nope. It takes about an hour to get here by subway and bus. Suwon is the capital of Gyeonggi-do. Thank you! This is easily reached by rail from Seoul. The Sinpungnu Gate is located at the entrance of the Temporary Palace and costs an additional 1,500 KRW (about 1.50 USD) to get in.As with most places in South Korea, the best time to visit would be in the spring or fall. It looked like there were a few areas with pretty cherry blossoms as well, and winter with the snow must be breathtaking!Suwon is only about 40-minutes to an hour away from the center of Seoul, and it’s even on the subway line! From there I walked the entire fortress wall (plus a few detours in between) until I made it right back to where I started. However, it also makes for a great weekend trip as there are tons of other fun things to do in Suwon. 11, 13, 36, 38, 39 near Tourist Info Centre to Hwaseong Fortress (10 mins). You could easily do it in an hour if you wanted, but I’d advise enjoying it!I stayed in Seoul and did it as a day trip, and this is easily possible, but if you want to actually spend a night or two in Suwon, Hwaseong Guesthouse is recommended:That’s about it folks!
