I fell in love with these characters. Her words just flow smoothly across the pages. We’d love your help. In the end I was happy with the last chapter because love is love. I do not know what I feel about this book. I'm pleased to announce that Our Chemical Hearts redeemed itself by the end. I could not put my kindle down. Sutherland describes these feelings in a thousand different ways, each one more beautiful than the last. I loved the writing and the humor, but the whole 'trying to cancel out the manic pixie dream girl by calling her a manic pixie dream girl over and OVER' thing was too much. I wanted to read this book because it was compared to Fault in Our Stars and Eleanor & Park, two of my most favorite books of all time. 0399546561 A brilliant, cutting, moving (and yet hilarious) smack-down of Manic Pixie Dream Girls - and how you should love a girl, not just the idea of a girl.Have you ever read a book and felt like you wrote it?

The author has excellent writing skills. This may not be the best contemporary book I have ever read, but it’s still an important book with a narrative that needed to be told. I enjoyed reading her words. I started this book with high hopes because DAMN THAT COVER IS BEAUTIFUL and was severely let down. Henry Page is a smart and self-aware teenager who’s happily managed to make it to the ripe old age of seventeen without losing his heart to anyone.
I did not expect this depth by the synopsis and the first few chapters. Instead, he's been happy to focus on his grades, on getting into a semi-decent college and finally becoming editor of his school newspaper. This is a some what coming of age with a twist. This is the second book in a row that I've read that I thoroughly enjoyed, but still had a handful of problems with it. It would have been so much more gut-wrenching and impacting if I had found the romance even remotely shippable before that… but I did not, unfortunately. One of those, "Why did I take so long to read this book?" I'm so conflicted. I really wanted to love this book, but I just liked it. I struggled with Grace’s character Our Chemical Hearts reminds me of a lot of other YA contemporary books I've read; a mashup of bits from All The Bright Places, Papertowns, Eleanor & Park, The Start of Me and You, and When We Collided. Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland bills itself as “kind of” a love story, and also “not your average story of boy meets girl.” The novel starts off with Henry Page telling readers about how he expected to first fall in love, and then introducing us to his unexpected first love, Grace.

Those two things really rubbed me the wrong way and took away from what I think was otherwise a phenomenal debut novel and an amazing insight into first love and love lost. I loved the writing and the humor, but the whole 'trying to cancel out the manic pixie dream girl by calling her a manic pixie dream girl over and OVER' thing was too much. I wasn’t a cane user in high school, but I have been disabled my entire life, and have always combated internalized ableism, especially about the use of mobility aids.Although I could tell from the beginning that the novel was going to make Grace into a tragic character, I was hopeful that it would still find a way to subvert tropes and harmful representation of characters with disabilities.Let us know what you think of the site.

“Love doesn't need to last a lifetime for it to be real. If you're looking for a YA contemporary that is both devastating and beautifulA really thought-provoking book. Henry Page was someone else by the end of the story and although there were plenty of things about him I still disliked, I understood him. It's not just about "oh this is dirty with a stain". I cried and laughed many times during my read. The storyline made me think about teens who have lost classmates/friends and my heart ached. Our Chemical Hearts, one of our most anticipated books coming out this fall, happens to fall under the latter category: it’s an irresistible story of first love, broken hearts, and the golden seams that put them back together again. The main character calls out the racism.... but then continues to call a character named Seeta Ganguly, Sugar Gandhi instead of her actual name. Our Chemical Hearts deals with themes of loss, grief, acceptance, redemption and of course, love. So here it is:While reading this book, I did a list of all the things that I loved about it, because I knew I would be too emotional in the end to write something. I know this sounds too egotistic, ambitious, haughty [insert other synonyms here] of me and I hope the author doesn’t condemn me but if I could write even just half as good as Ms. 3.5 stars.
