Aelita (Russian: Аэли́та, pronounced [ɐɛˈlʲitə]), also known as Aelita: Queen of Mars, is a silent science fiction film directed by Soviet filmmaker Yakov Protazanov made at the Mezhrabpom-Rus film studio and released in 1924.It was based on Alexei Tolstoy's 1923 novel of the same name. A young man travels to Mars in a rocket ship, where he leads a popular uprising against the ruling group with the support of Queen Aelita, who has fallen in love with him after watching him through a telescope. The costuming for the Martian aristocrats concerns styles that were non-existent at the time, and seem to have arrived out of the 50's American Sci-Fi films. Aelita, Queen of Mars is certainly a gem of a movie.







The so-called Revolution on Mars happens far too quickly to be believed, and much of the scenes are simply improbable propaganda for spreading the Soviet cause everywhere.

Thus is really a portrait of ordinary life in Russia just after the Russian Revolution. It is 111 minutes long, the original was 120 minutes, so something has been cut.

Russia's first big budget science fiction spectacular. Not a huge amount of sci-fi in it though, it’s more of a ‘slice of life’ type movie.
