Passive solar design doesn’t use any outside energy or require much special equipment, but simply takes advantage of existing natural phenomena, like the direction of the sun or the insulating properties of concrete.Passive solar heating uses a phenomenon that happens naturally — sunlight warming the air — and amplifies that effect by building a home with a high thermal mass (thermal mass is a home or material’s ability to absorb heat when the surrounding air is warmer, and release heat when the surrounding air is cooler).
